Not all Raspberry Pi users design their own add-on boards, but if you do, you certainly want to be able to use surface mount parts.  Our through hole Raspberry Pi Add-on boards have our signature offset grids and many other feature which make better use of the space on our board and give you more flexibility.  Our board also has a ground plane and pre-routed traces to reduce the need for jumpers.  We then bundle our SMT to DIP adapters with the Raspberry Pi board to make SOIC, QFP, QFN/DFN part of your workable solution.  You design with Raspberry Pi due to its power.  Why would you limit your design options?..you want to use that power.  Surface Mount is now part of the power you wield on your Raspberry Pi projects courtesy of Schmartboard.
